Slate Velvet Underglaze is a dark, bluish-gray at cone 05 that darkens to a deep, slate shade when fired to cone 5 and transforms into a melancholic blue-green at cone 10. A clear glaze accentuates the color of the underglaze significantly at any temperature.
Velvet Underglazes are very versatile, semi-transparent underglazes that offer two finish possibilities. When left unglazed they have the appearance of velvet. Or, when glazed with a clear gloss glaze, they have an intensified color with a soft stain matte finish. Colors may be mixed together to create unique colors. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range and can be used on most clay bodies at most temperatures. Some colors may fade at high temperatures (cone 7 and up).
If left unglazed, AMACO® Velvets should not be used on surfaces which come in contact with food or drink.
