Mugshot Monday 11.10.2014

Mugshot Monday with Catherine Boswell

Mugshot Monday is back again!  A new week of possibilities is ahead of us, and we wish this mug by Catherine Boswell was in hand (but this lovely image will have to do).  We love how the terracotta clay creates a subtle blush through the white slip surface, and the green glaze wisps around the delicately incised floral motif.  This piece is wheel thrown, but the scalloped bottom brings an air of altered sophistication and light play to the foot of this mug.  The curvature of the pulled handle echoes the scallops and the lacy arching of the sgraffito leaves.  The surface of the clay was scratched and textured, before the slip was poured over the surface - this texture gently peeks through the white slip, balancing out the elegance of this mug with a pleasant rustic quality.
