Mugshot Monday with Rovin Featured Artist
Last week we introduced you to our Featured Artist, Janelle Songer and her world travel inspired, colorful and and botanical work. If you missed that interview, have no fear, click HERE!
Today, we bring you one of her stunning mugs for Mugshot Monday! Janelle has a background as a 2d artist; she spent years painting and drawing before turning to the tangible and tactile world of clay. It is obvious that she is still deeply rooted in 2D as her painting and drawing skills translate so masterfully to her beautiful pottery. Her ceramic work is light and airy though it is made from the darkest and earthiest clay we make! Janelle uses our rich and creamy low grog RO-82m. For contrast she covers most of the rich clay with white slip, and then uses sgraffito to carve through the slip, revealing the red-brown base. She uses this technique to creating botanical patterns filled with movement. Ms. Songer accents the sgraffito drawings with pops of color, some subtle and some bold.
We especially appreciate how the shape of the handle on this mug mimics the graceful lines of the sgraffito design, the handle itself looks botanical like a leaf or petal. We also appreciate that she has left the beautiful terracotta clay near the bottom exposed and uncovered by slip - which shows off the rich quality of the clay and speaks to the process she has so superbly employed.
