This is a great project, for many reasons. Robot Plates can be made in one sitting, don't require any high tech equipment, and can easily be modified to suit different age groups and skill levels! Use the Robot Plate Project to teach about positive and negative space, and develop fine motor skill through the drawing and cutting out of the stencils used to make the Robot. The Robot Plate Project was adapted from John Posts Robot Tiles project, he has many clay based lesson plans available on his website at johnpost.us.
Now that our stuff is together, let's make Robot Plates...
1. Draw the robot on a piece of paper, and cut him out.
2. Roll a slab of clay, approximately 1/3 of an inch thick. Using the paper plate as a template, cut a circle from the slab.
3. Using a sponge, gently press the slab of clay into the paper plate, and smooth the edges.
Now you are ready to apply the Robot!
4. When the plate is leather hard, apply the robot cut-out. Press it gently into the clay with your index finger, making sure all of the edges are attached to the clay with no gaps. If the plate is a little too dry, press the robot with a damp sponge.
5. Now brush the entire plate with underglaze or contrasting slip. Allow the underglaze/slip to set up - it will be dull rather than shiny.
6. The paper stencil will now be easy to remove, just gently peel a corner of the paper with a pin tool.
7. Once the plate is dry, bisque fire, then clear glaze and glaze fire as directed by your clay manufacturer.
